Motor Racing Outreach

I have such high respect for chaplains in sports. I’ve interviewed a number of them, and many of their players, and over and over again I hear about their ministry of availability. They are available before games, in the middle of games, after games, early in the morning, late at night, and on the weekends too.

That’s the philosophy of Motor Racing Outreach (MRO). I interviewed Tim Griffin, the vice president and director of spiritual formation at MRO, as well as being the lead chaplain for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series recently. Here’s what he said about being available:

“We feel like our ministry is really like a classic chaplaincy,” Griffin said. “If we can make ourselves available and people can find us in the garage and if we can get up between a couple of haulers or over a stack of tires or behind pit road and we can have a conversation, then that might be our discipleship moment.”
